Custodians of our Ecosystems: Women, Raptors, and Unsettling Words

Scientists and writers like Rachel Carson, Theo Colburn, and Sandra Steingraber have called attention to environmental pollutants and the negative impacts that they have on ecosystems and human health. Because of biomagnification and as apex predators, raptors (birds of prey) are also bioindicators of problems in our environment. Oddly, these harbingers – strong, intelligent women, birds of prey, and words that tell the story of how we are destroying our home (Earth) – make some people uncomfortable. But they are the very things we need to keep our ecosystems healthy and functioning. In this presentation, Dr. Diane Husic of Moravian College will discuss some of these ideas and explore the question of “What science, words, metaphors and other expressions are needed to address today’s environmental challenges?” This FREE program is part of the Stay at Home Speaker Series, targeted towards adults and interested learners, but of course attendees of all ages and backgrounds are welcomed! A private link to the webinar will be emailed to all registrants about 1 hour before the start of the live program. A recording of the webinar will be posted and shared to all registrants following the event. Only 1 registration per household permitted to allow as many households to participate as possible. Registration closes 2 hours before the start of the program. Hawk Mountain will be recording this webinar, including all questions, comments, etc., by the audience.
